On Radio 1’s “Countrywide” this morning, Trevor Sargent TD of the Green Party again repeated the assertion that the Dog Breeding Establishments Bill is on the Programme for Government, as agreed with Fianna Fail in October of 2009.

This is entirely incorrect. John Gormley’s Bill is not in the Programme for Government. It is purely a Green Party initiative.

Trevor Sargent attempted to play down the impact this Bill will have on hunting in Ireland and tried to give the impression that the Minister has consulted widely with hunting people. He has not. Minister Gormley has consistently turned down requests from the HAI to meet with him to discuss this Bill.

Trevor Sargent attempted to play down the impact this Bill will have on hunting in Ireland and tried to give the impression that the Minister has consulted widely with hunting people. He has not. Minister Gormley has consistently turned down requests from the HAI to meet with him to discuss this Bill.

This high-handed refusal to listen or to try and reach a sensible compromise with those who will be most affected by this Bill is the hallmark of how the Green Party’s anti-hunting agenda has been conducted.

Trevor Sargent said there have been amendments to this Bill. They are meaningless in the context of hunting. Trevor Sargent wants to convince the public that the Dog Breeding Establishments Bill is already a done deal. It is not. He wants to paint Fianna Fail into a corner by pretending this Bill has their prior approval. It does not.

The Green Party have for many years been quite open about their determination to end what they call “bloodsports”. It is telling they are now using health and safety to ban the Ward Union Hunt and are trying to strangle hunt kennels with red tape on grounds of being against puppy farming – while keeping quiet about their real motivation.

The many thousands who hunt across this country are not fooled and we are waiting and watching over the next few weeks to see if common sense and decency will prevail within our political system.
